Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad offers a one-of-a-kind journey through the Sierra National Forest. Located just minutes from the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park on Highway 41, guests can climb aboard open-air or covered cars pulled by historic Shay steam locomotives—engines once used to haul lumber through the rugged mountain terrain—and experience the sights, sounds, and nostalgia of early mountain railroading.
The most popular option is the Logger Steam Train, a 1-hour long excursion. As the train winds through the forest you’ll enjoy scenic views, the rhythmic chuff of the steam engine, and engaging narration that brings the area’s history to life. Midway through the trip, you’ll have the chance to step off, stretch your legs, and get an up-close look at the train. The experience doesn’t end with the train ride! Visitors can also try their hand at gold panning, browse the charming gift shops, and go back in time while visiting the Thornberry Museum.
If you are looking for something with a little more pizazz, enjoy one of the special excursions that bring added magic to the rails such as the Moonlight Special or Moonlight Melodrama. This 3-hour long event includes a BBQ dinner, entertainment, and a magical evening train ride. These rides are limited so make sure to visit the website for scheduling.
Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad has been family-owned and operated since 1965 and is dedicated to preserving local history and sharing the magic of steam railroading with visitors from around the world. You can even bring your train-loving furry friends on a leash to ride for free!
Whether you’re looking for family-friendly adventure, a memorable outing with friends, or an immersive step back in time, Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad offers a welcoming and unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages!
