Overview

To many, a trailhead is just a place to park and start a hike, but for Mariposa Trails it is the place where a relationship between the user and nature begins. Voluntourism is one way a visitor can enter this relationship of reciprocity. A blend of vacation travel, volunteering and stewardship, tourists explore new destinations and give back to the communities they visit. Mariposa Trails has crafted voluntourism adventures whereby travelers to Yosemite National Park can also opt to be “trail stewards” of nearby hiking trails, creating a meaningful way to give back while visiting the Sierras and Yosemite National Park.

About the Founder

Bill King obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in “Geography and Ecosystems Management” from UCLA in 1987, with special projects in wilderness management and wilderness protection. He worked two summers in Yosemite N.P. working as a “Trail and Campsite Impacts Monitor” and “Wilderness Fire Monitor”. Upon graduation, Bill worked for the Angeles N.F. looking for Spotted Owls and Nelson Bighorn Sheep, before beginning a lifetime career as an urban planner working for the communities of Boise Idaho, Mariposa County and the City of Merced. As a resident of Mariposa, Bill was a member its Search and Rescue Team and now spends much of his free time in the local mountains and as a part-time naturalist with Yosemite Conservancy. In 2017, after a life-changing car-accident, Bill retired from urban planning and co-founded the non-profit, “Mariposa Trails” and presently serves as its Executive Director.
