Beautiful and nearly ethereal, a candle-lighting and procession in the old Mexican town of Hornitos winds its way from the festive mariachi music in the plaza up the hill to St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, its bell solemnly tolling over the adjacent cemetery. The event is held each year on November 2, to celebrate All Souls Day, and Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
Participants are welcome to observe the ceremony or participate (bring your own wind-proof candle and holder). A mass and blessing are held, and participants may place their candles on the graves of family, friends, or any unlit grave in the cemetery. Bring warm clothes, as it can be chilly.
