Mariposa is home to the breathtaking 13-pound Fricot Gold Nugget. Removed from the rock that surrounded it by using acid, this beauty is not just a lump of gold, but a piece of natural art.

Mono Lake
Mono
Lake
Directly adjacent to Lee Vining in Mono County is the austere and beautiful Mono Lake. Eerie tufa towers dot the shore of this salt lake, which provides a breeding ground for millions of birds that feed on the lakes tiny brine shrimp. Ancient volcanic structures near the lake add to the drama of this high desert jewel.

Sierra Vista
Scenic Byway
Sierra Vista Scenic Byway
Just north of Oakhurst in Madera County is one of the most beautiful drives in all of California, the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway. This hidden treasure of scenic wonder is lightly traveled and offers vistas of California mountain scenery that many will miss in their hurry to the big name locations.

Columbia State Historic Park
Columbia State Historic Park
Step into the past in Columbia State Historic Park, a gold rush era (1850's) town that has been preserved and includes operating businesses, static displays, and demonstrations of trades long forgotten and an operating gold mine. You can pan for gold there, but the real gold is in visiting this area.
